Which dates should you choose?
- For the biggest samba-school spectacle: plan around 5 and 6 February.
- For street Carnival: focus on the main 6–9 February period.
- For both: arriving by 4 or 5 February gives you access to the Special Group parades as well as the main street celebrations.
- For a longer Carnival trip: include either the Pre-Carnival weekend or stay for the Champions Parade and Post-Carnival weekend.
Anhembi Sambadrome
This is São Paulo Carnival at its most theatrical: thousands of performers, samba percussion, enormous floats, coordinated costumes and competitive parade performances continuing deep into the night.
The Carnival experience to book in advance
The samba-school parades are very different from informal street Carnival. Each school presents a carefully prepared theme through music, choreography, costumes, percussion and allegorical floats while competing under formal judging criteria.
The Special Group represents the principal competition and is the natural choice for first-time international visitors who want the most spectacular Anhembi experience.

Follow the major circuits and larger blocos. Expect dense crowds, amplified music, long periods outdoors and significant changes to traffic and street access.

A practical base for many first-time visitors, with hotels, restaurants, shopping and strong public transport connections.

Useful for some Carnival activities and cultural attractions, but accommodation choices should be considered street by street rather than by district name alone.
